This large OC corner lot required a new lawn and a new look! We mixed a large green space for a big family with low-water mediterranean and native plants & a sexy custom redwood fence. The entry required a substantial exterior design re-think & meticulously crafted walkway layouts to organize the home's uniquely angled layout.

We filled in with forest on this large Altadena estate. Working with century-old sycamores and deodar cedars on an unusually shaped property we incorporated a wealth of colorful foliage, native plants and Native California lawn. Custom driveway, cul-de-sac, masonry fireplace, vegetable gardens, waterfall and dry stream are just a few of the fine features in this completely tranquil and dynamic woodland garden.

Silver foliage and glowing blossoms adorn this charming Altadena modern home. A large existing crepe myrtle provided color contrast to make this front yard pop. In the backyard low-water low-mow native lawn grass created a huge play space for 2 young children while fruit trees, a cactus garden and natives bedeck the beds.

The home of contemporary artist David Tourje was once the Chouanard House, a historic South Pasadena property that supported local artists at the turn of the century. This Monterey Colonial home is sanctuary to a number of endangered Engelman Oaks, a multitude of drought tolerant gardens, eclectic art installations studio and an ample pool. Califia Ecodesigns worked to protect and restore existing plantings while adding a variety of plants to support local habitat.

An average sized backyard was in dire need of a lawn downsize. Working closely with the client, we developed a romantic aesthetic with lots of vibrant color and personality. We featured sages, grasses, poppies & geraniums. She was skeptical we could create a cottage garden that would hold up the LA basin's heat but there's no room for doubt now! Any garden style can be drought tolerant with a little bit of analysis and planning.

This beautifully designed Hollywood classic was in serious need of a landscape refresh. We converted the dying lawn and old birch trees in the front yard to elegant jelly palms and grand Decomposed Granite entry courtyard. The backyard pool terrace got an update with a variety of adaptable hot-colored tropicals and a new slope planting. Thanks to New Image Landscaping for their amazing install work!

An upscale residential complex suffered a major landscape fail & invited our team (along with New Image Corp.) to do the retrofit. We devised a traditional looking landscape that appealed to residents (roses + hedging) that was still ultra low water and offered year round color.

From chickens and ducks to beehives and fungi farms, we've had our hands in many a homestead design and project. We're always eager to hear your wildest food forest fantasies!

In 2017 Califia took on an ambitious project: creating pre-designed gardens for property owners looking for affordable and elegant landscapes without the designer price tag. Our first line of retail plant packages includes edible, architectural and native gardens in a variety of color palettes and climate tolerances. Check them out!
